Stay at Inn on the Lake

Location Marsh Lake, Yukon, Canada
On the shores of Marsh Lake, a little more than half an hour’s drive from the Yukon’s capital—Whitehorse— sits the log cabin retreat of Inn on the Lake. It’s one of those places where your every whim seems to have been catered to before you’d even dreamed of it, and from the moment you step out onto the lodge’s spacious deck (a glass of wine or a cold beer has already been pressed into your hand), you feel yourself sink into a deep relaxation.
Stretch out and soak up spectacular views over the snowcapped mountains, pristine forest, and crystal-clear lake, which freezes over in winter. If this seems insufficiently arduous, why not grab the binoculars and birding field guide that live on the windowsill and spot a loon or two while you sip a sundowner? In the evening, there is a four-course dinner, which guests eat together at a long table. During the summer there’s fishing, kayaking, and canoeing on the lake, or hiking and mountain biking in the surrounding wilderness. Passes to the nearby golf course are included in the package. In winter, the Yukon days are crisp and skies are often blue. Guests can ski (crosscountry, backcountry, and downhill are all on the menu), drive snowmobiles or dog teams, try their feet at snowshoeing—or their hands at ice fishing—and at night lie back in the hot tub and watch the northern lights dance green and red against black starry skies.
The lodge is open year-round, and accommodation is available both inthe main houseand in independent cabins. The biggest of the cabins comes complete with its own deck and hot tub, both of which face north, to guarantee the best views of the Aurora Borealis. Steal a few nights here during winter, and you can curl up for a romantic evening in the steamy waters while the northern lights fill the sky.
